Abstract

In today’s science classes, where standards are shifting toward engaging in scientific practices, a shift in science assessments to better reflect the skills and knowledge achieved in modern science classrooms is needed. This paper discusses the value of the Science Symposium as an authentic alternative assessment for students. A description of the research experiences available to students in the REACH (Research Education on Air and Cardiovascular Health) is discussed and suggestions provided to teachers to incorporating science symposia as alternative assessment options.
