He teaches methods of teaching science, Graduate science education courses, and professional development courses. His research focuses on the effective use of technology in instruction, how to help children construct and interpret graphs, and developing a tool for teacher observation that provides robust data used for feedback, coaching, and indicators or growth in teaching.
Berg has been the PI or Co-PI of NSF NOYCE and Research Experience for Teachers (RET) grants, long-term funding from the NIH SEPA grant programs and Department of Education, and active in many other national, state, and regional teacher education or professional development efforts.
Berg is past co-editor of The Journal of Science Teacher Education and publishes in scholarly journals such as the Journal of Research in Science Education, the Journal of Science Teacher Education, and Science Education, and practitioner journals such as The Science Teacher, The Biology Teacher, and Science and Children. Berg began his science teaching career in rural North Dakota, then earned his MS and Ph.D. in science education at the University of Iowa.
