WVU Camp Challenges Students to Learn about Early Childhood Health

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WDTV)– All week high school juniors from 26 counties across the state have come together to conduct research projects related to childhood health.

120 students are attending the Health Sciences Technology Academy Biomedical Summer Institute Camp at the West Virginia University Health Sciences Center.

At the camp their learning about early childhood obesity, diets and physically activity to develop health lifestyles in children at an early age.

Some of the sessions they participate in include topics on the heart, lungs, diabetes and childhood nutrition. Students will conduct their own research and present at the end of the week.

“They’ll present their project ideas and then in the Fall they’ll go back with their teachers and their HSTA clubs all across the state and implement these projects in their counties,” said HSTA curriculum coordinator and camp director, Sean Freeland.

In the fall, the students will work with their local after-school programs for preschoolers to continue on with their projects.

The camp has been going on for more than two decades and involves around 800 students across the state.
